Summer 1986
Collecting minnows from the water tank at Oracle State Park
Lightning so bright it made me see purple one evening
Stars so numerous the never seemed to end
And old radio that played John Denver tapes
And a lecture he gave once called:
On Being Human
The mice I tried to catch after saving for a live trap
The time we walked into the tenant houses to find a rattlesnake winding through the kitchen
The attic of the old mansion
The broken China and horse shoes strewn about the grounds
The makeshift 'museum' my sister and I created from them
A rare treat watching Crocodile Dundee II in Tucson
Throwing rocks at cans for hours
Mark Isham in the geodesic dome
The Airstream we lived in to guard Kartchner Caverns before it opened to the public
Reevis Mountain School of Self-Reliance
And the giant bonfires we sat around at night
Collecting rocks by the stream
The stories of Willy Whitefeather
Unable to sleep...
When my mother went into the wilderness for five days on her first vision quest
